What to Do After An Assault

Title IX

Bystander Intervention

If you are a bystander or witness to an interaction where someone is in danger, there are actions you can take to help. Keep in mind that your own safety is important too; do not put yourself in unnecessary danger.

Acronym: CARE

Create a distraction: Interrupt the interaction. You could start a conversation with the person in danger, or start a group activity if that is appropriate to the setting. Stay with the person so they are not alone.

Ask directly: Ask the person if they need help. If possible, do this discretely or away from the attention of the dangerous person(s).

Rally others: Find someone to help. This could be other bystanders, authority figures, or friends of the person in danger.

Extend support: Offer support to the person and ensure they reach a safe location.
